Rain forces early finish in Classic Pairs

Consistent rain has seen the 2008 South Tweed Sports Classic Pairs finals shortened. Players began at 10am with a 21 end final on the agenda but it was obvious early this wouldn't occur. The controlling body reduced the ends to 15 and later to 12 ends.

DIVISION 1 Men

This was a tight game from the start with only 9 shots scored after 8 ends as David** Baker (McKenzie Park, Ralph Fair leading) led Dave Gardiner (Broadbeach) 5-4. Gardiner took the lead with a 3 at the next and it was 8-7 to Gardiner after 12. Unfortunately for Baker, they were holding a shot with bowls still to play on the 13th end when play was called to a halt permanently and the scores on the 12th standing.

DIVISION 1 Ladies

Brenda Thompson (Helensvale) continued her great run at South Tweed with back to back division 1 Classic Pairs titles with Linda Morish. It was 3 all after 6 ends against Maria Rigby (Cabramatta) when Thompson picked up 5 shots at the 7th. Rigby countered with 4 shots in 2 ends to trail 7-8 on 9 ends. Thompson picked up 4 shots at the next only to see Rigby collect 3 as Thompson led 12-10 on 11 ends. Thompson led 16-10 playing the 15th end when Rigby conceded with only a handful of bowls to be played.

Division 2 Men

Graham Richards (Tweed Heads) led from the first end against South Tweed's Ray Hickman. Each time Richards look to extend his lead Hickman came back; it was 5-0 after 2 then 5 all on 5 ends, 11-5 on 7 then 13-10 after 10 ends. Richards claimed a further 3 shots and won 16-10 after 12 ends.

Division 2 Section Ladies

Irene Byron (Mermaid Beach) defeated Norma Munns (South Tweed) 16-7 after 12 ends. Byron led 10-5 on 8 ends then added a decisive 5 shots at the next to jump to 15-5. Munns was down 5 shots again at the 10th but a great save saw her claw one back but it was not enough. Byron closed it out 16-7.
