Burnett Bags Double In PBA Qualifiers In Carlisle
Scotsman Darren Burnett became the first player to qualify for two World Bowls Tour events next season after success in the Scottish International Open section of the World Bowls Tour & Professional Bowls Association UK National Qualifiers in Carlisle.
The 32-year-old from Arbroath joins fellow qualifier Glenn Skipp, from Thornaby, in Cleveland, from the event at the Cumbria club – while Englishman Scott Dunham, from Spalding in Lincolnshire, and Welshman Jonathan Tomlinson, from the Islwyn club, celebrated success in the parallel qualifying events at the Bristol Indoor Club in Avon.
Just 48 hours after earning a qualifying place in the International Open in Sussex, Burnett marked his second success by beating Robert Chisholm, from North Shields, 3-5, 5-4, 2-0 in the Qualifier 5 final.
In the previous round the world number 54 had overcome Claire Johnston – a 29-year-old from Auchinleck and one of the most successful women in the PBA qualifiers.
Burnett is back on the World Bowls Tour for the third successive season after qualifying for the Scottish International Open last year. A former Scottish Open runner-up, the Arbroath policeman was a surprise quarter-finalist in the 2003 World Championship.
After beating Scots in the quarters and semis, Glenn Skipp faced Scott Bishop – also a Scot – in the Qualifier 4 final. The 43-year-old, ranked 28 in the world, recovered from a narrow defeat in the second set to beat his Coatbridge opponent 9-6, 6-7, 2-1.
Skipp qualified for the Potters Holidays World Championship at the beginning of this year – and reached the last sixteen in the Welsh International Open in 2007.
In Bristol, Scott Dunham had to outplay two women to reach the Qualifier 6 final – first beating Janice Gower (Cumbria) 6-6, 7-6, then Guernsey star Alison Merrien 8-7, 8-6 before facing Welshman John Roberts in the climax.
The 29-year-old again had his work cut out – and, after dropping the set, fought back to win 7-5, 3-8, 2-0 to earn his first place in a WBT ranking event since competing in the 2005 World Championship in Norfolk.
The Qualifier7 event saw the emergence of a new name on the World Bowls Tour when Jonathan Tomlinson beat Kent opponent Kieran Moss, from Margate, 8-3, 6-1 in the final.
Tomlinson, 26, will make his WBT debut at the 2008 Scottish International Open, the opening event of the 2008/09 World Bowls Tour season which takes place at the Dewars Centre in Perth from 8-15 November.
