Heard & Tuohy Celebrate Surrey World Singles Double
Surrey bowlers Duncan Heard and Stephen Tuohy have claimed the first two England qualifying slots in next year’s Potters Holidays World Indoor Championship after successes in the World Bowls Tour & Professional Bowls Association World Singles Qualifiers in Bournemouth and Bromley, respectively.
Heard, representing the Wey Valley club in Guildford, reached the England Qualifier 1 final after beating Dorchester’s Darren Nutman 4-3, 6-6, while his opponent Graham Stanley beat Darren’s younger brother Shaun Nutman 7-2, 4-6, 2-1 in the other semi-final.
But in the final, 38-year-old Heard finally prevailed over Stanley - defeating his Banister Park club opponent, from Eastleigh in Hampshire, 5-5, 6-5, to earn his maiden appearance in a WBT ranking event.
It was almost a Wey Valley double as Stephen Tuohy faced the Guildford club’s Paul Coleman in the England 2 final at the Bromley Indoor Club in Orpington.
Coleman, who reached the second round of the 2007 World Championship, forced the dramatic game into a best-of-three ends tie-break after both sets were tied. But it was Tuohy who ultimately triumphed as the 42-year-old from Egham claimed a 5-5, 6-6, 2-1 win to mark his return to the World Bowls Tour for the first time since appearing in the Scottish International Open in 2005.
The 2009 Potters Holidays World Indoor Singles Championship will take place for the 11th successive year at Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk, from 5-25 January.
