Bhartu Battles To WBT Double In Canadian PBA Qualifiers

Hirendra Bhartu earned qualifying positions in two of next season’s World Bowls Tour rankings events after successes in the World Bowls Tour & Professional Bowls Association Qualifiers in Canada.

The success also marked Bhartu’s 12th PBA qualifying triumph in Canada – and consolidated the 50-year-old from British Columbia’s status as No1 in the PBA Canada rankings.

After beating Martin Haalstra 11-2, 9-5 in the Scottish International Open qualifying final, Bhartu went on to overcome John Bezear 11-2, 8-7 in the Welsh International Open final.

There was also double qualifying success for Fred Fong, who partnered Christie Grahame to beat Remi Canuel & Mike Spadafora 12-1, 7-6 in the final for nest year’s Potters Holidays World Pairs Championship, then defeated Jeff Harding 5-5, 11-1 in the final for the 2009 Potters Holidays World Singles Championship.

Fong will make his maiden appearance on the WBT’s unique blue portable rink at Potters Leisure Resort in January.

Mike Bester achieved the third PBA qualifying success of his career when he fought back from a set down beat Richard Yau 5-10, 8-6, 2-1 – thereby picking up the Canadian qualifying slot for the International Open.
